Well, this will likely be my last post of 2011. It's been a heck of a year- I rediscovered this old blog and managed to post 64 times in the past months. I completed my last fall semester at Virginia Tech with straight A's, and managed to be in several fantastic shows.
I don't have a list of all the wonderful things from this past year- I'm no good at that. I only have a f things I'd regret not mentioning in this last post.
First, I was truly blessed to be a member of the Vt Theatre Department this past year. Y'all have given me some of my best memories, whether they be hanging out at someone's apartment on a random night (any night works, really) or working on a show with you. You are all dedicated individuals, fun to be around, and I'm happy to know you. Let's go into this spring semester and make some good memories.
Secondly, my good friend and mentor Grant Mudge is retiring from his position as artistic director at Richmond Shakespeare, for various reasons. This man truly inspired me to join the theatre community, and pursue acting and directing. I wouldn't be in theatre without him, and my life would be fairly boring, at best. Break a leg, Grant. I, and Richmond Theatre, will miss you.
Third, and lastly (but certainly not least) I want to thank my family and girlfriend for their support to get me through this past year. I know I have my moments, and they're not always pretty, but you are always there for me and have been for a very long time. Thank you Mom, Dad, and Mary.
Now that I've managed to get past those light items... Here's your moment for today:

How Many Construction Workers Does It Take...
Hey everyone!
December really has been a slow month for me, posting-wise. I've been very busy!
My buddies Cody Oher and Dan Fissmer came into town to get on set for Lincoln, in Petersburg. Cody crashed on my couch and Fissmer crashed on my floor for a few nights - had fun showing them around Richmond. Went to see "A Christmas Carol for Two Actors" at Richmond Shakespeare and "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" at Sycamore Rouge. Two great shows!
Also, finally saw Contagion - great movie. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - Even better movie. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Best movie. Honestly, best movie I've ever seen. Go see it folks.
And here it is - your tiny moment of hilarity:

The Secret to Success
Hey everyone! It's been a very long time since I last posted.
What's happened? Let's see:
I took the LSAT's again - hope to hear back soon about whether that expensive process payed off this time. Last time I did well, but I really want to improve.
I was cast in La Ronde, a show going up at Tech in February, as the Count. I think it's going to be a great show! Remember that other show I was in? "Almost, Maine"? La Ronde is like that, only German and sexy.
I also went to the ACC Championship with Mary - it was a good trip, despite the loss to Clemson. BUT VT IS SUGAR BOWL BOUND!
There was another tragedy at Virginia Tech. A shooter killed a police officer during a routine traffic stop, and then went on to take his own life. The officer was Officer Crouse. He leaves 5 children and a wife behind him. The shooter was a Radford student, who had committed armed robbery several hours before. Responses to the shooting have ranged from sympathetic to Virginia Tech students, to incredulity that this happened at Virginia Tech. All I have to say is: We are Hokie Strong, We are Hokie Proud. Virginia Tech is a family, and we stick together.
The following Sunday (the 11th of December) I turned 21! Happy Birthday to me!
After that? I wrote 3 papers, took two exams, and am now home! My buddy Cody Oher is staying the weekend because he's in Spielberg's Lincoln in Petersburg, so it's good to see him!
And without further ado, the secret to success: (a swift kick)

What Happens When... You Mix Two Drinks at Starbucks?
So, this will mark my 3rd post in nearly as many days (highly unusual for me, right?)
Today was a pretty fun day - I visited my old high school and saw a bunch of my favorite teachers. It's weird - now that I'm graduated from there, they actually are kind of... cool. Blasphemy, right? I also got a chance to work out with my old wrestling team... I'm in much better shape now than I was then (and Coach pointed that out.) (Sorry Coach.)
After, I went to Starbucks with my girlfriend, and called my buddy Andrew (who recently began work as a barista in Blacksburg) to find out what I should get. He told me either to get a Peppermint Mocha, or a Caramel Brule Latte. Being indecisive as I was, I got both... in the same cup. Excellent drink.
In the meantime, watch this. It restored my faith and humanity, and was really touching. No, it's not supposed to be cute. It's supposed to warm your heart. Enjoy.

Harry Potter... as a Teen Comedy.
Hey everybody!
Classes for next semester have been posted. For the first time ever, I'll finally have a class with my lovely leading lady, Mary. (VT Theatre - can you guess what it is?)
So it's official - people are throwing VT around as a possible national championship contender in the BCS. This is cool. Hope we live up to our hype...
By the way... Words With Friends is very addicting. I need to go do something to get away from it... except it's on my phone, which I can't very well leave behind, can I? oops. Maybe I should go see a movie. Anyone have any good suggestions? Leave a comment below!
But seriously, the reason you clicked here was to see Harry Potter as a teen comedy. This is genius.

The Layover
Hey everyone!
So, Thanksgiving break is upon us. Next weekend Virginia Tech and UVA play for the Coastal Division title, the opportunity to play in the ACC Championship, and a shot at the Orange Bowl.
No big deal, right?
After a long November, it's time to lay back, relax, and eat some turkey. Oh, and memorize lines for VT's Theatre Showcase. And get props for Suburbia. So, essentially, let's get going again.
But seeing my folks again is fantastic. They really support me.
Normally, this is part where I drop a cool/cute/fun/lame video for your viewing pleasure. Instead, I give you 21 free songs, courtesy of Mike Posner.

Did That Rhino Just Order A Drink?
Hey everyone!
Well, auditions for next semester's VT Theatre Department plays Servant of Two Masters and La Ronde are coming up. I'm excited! Being in either show would be great experience.
Also, this week was a pretty bad shakeup in College Football. Clemson was almost beaten, Boise State was beaten, and Stanford was beaten badly... all of which mean the Hokies profit, as we beat Georgia Tech on Thursday! GO HOKIES!
This Thursday is my last Thursday night game as a student here at VT... which is ironic because it's also my first, as I've had a show each of the past times we had a Thursday night game. Needless to say, I'm excited.
I found this clip while surfing the net today - it brought some smiles to my face.

Even The Cookie Monster Can Sing
Hard to believe this semester has flown by so quickly. Let's see - what's new?
Twelfth Night has 4 more shows... tonight, two tomorrow, and a Sunday Matinee. GO SEE IT! Also, VT's Glass Menagerie has been cast - Congratulations to everyone in that cast! I'm positive it will be a great show.
I'm working on a project of my own for next semester - look for updates on that to come.
Also, Suburbia (another show I'm working on) has a Kickstarter that you guys should check out. We're trying to raise funds to make this as great a show as possible (with this cast and crew, under the direction of Ryan Hunt and the helm of B Cast Entertainment, it's already looking phenomenal). If you could pledge just a few bucks to the cause, it would help us out a lot!
Now, I know Tom Waits has a unique style of singing - I never really understood where it came from, or how he didn't tear his throat apart with it. But apparently the Cookie Monster can cover him:

Party In The U.S.A.
Hey everyone!
It's been a crazy week and a half since I last updated. Miss me? Probably not. Hope so, though.
Here at VT Theatre we just had auditions for Glass Menagerie - break legs to all those who auditioned! I think it's going to be great (directed by Bob McGrath). Meanwhile, VT's Twelfth Night is currently running, and it such a fantastic show. Come see it! I'll probably be there - I plan on going multiple times.
This year really has been a great year for theatre here at VT. Our shows thus far ('This,' 'Almost, Maine,' and 'Twelfth Night') have all been home runs. I expect that B Cast entertainment's Suburbia will be another hit show (it goes up in December).
Sometimes work can get very exhausting. This is what happens when it does:

Ninjas: "Can't live with 'em, can't catch 'em"
I like shenanigans. They're just so much fun. I've kind of been up for group shenanigans, like exploring Blacksburg on foot and finding all the cool places that no one knows about. And climbing things. You can't have good shenanigans unless the following criteria are met:
1 - Something is climbed, be it a wall, building, or tree.
2 - There is some sort of suspense, like "I think we aren't supposed to be here." or "Dude, wouldn't it be kinda dangerous to go that high?"
3 - (Kinda optional) - Abandoned buildings are explored. Especially those that have been gutted of all furnishings and whatnot, and just have the occasional piece of rubbish.
So let's go do shenanigans. Like these guys.

Michele Bachmann can be funny, too.
Politics stink. I'm devoting a lot of time to my political science courses lately. More than my theatre courses, which is a weird change. Usually theatre takes all my time and I have to cram the papers in between rehearsals. Not so now!
In other news, election day is approaching. I recommend voting, if you're old enough. It's kinda fun and makes you feel important for an hour, which is useful if you're not feeling important. Or just want to partake in your rights.
Michele Bachmann stinks too, by the way. But, if she actually spoke like this? I'd vote for her and her sister's Sasquatch neighbor.

Mike Posner at Virginia Tech
Just got back from the concert. Must write a blog about it.
So, it was pouring rain when I got there. Mary and I had to run through it, and by the time we got through the doors we were completely soaked. My buddy Rankin joined us shortly thereafter and we went in.
DJ Rhetorik was on the turntables, and my friends Kelly and Spencer were already at their seats. Rhetorik spun some great warm-up beats, and then Travis Porter Music Group (TPMG) came out and started their set. They rapped over their own music, which was kinda weird, but then again, they freestyled over some of their hits, which was great. TPMG was great. They handed out their new mixtape to the audience during the set.
Then, Mike Posner.
He walks on to incredible lights and his Brain Trust producing music behind him. Keyboard, synth, piano, drums, and turntables. Bass is pumping. I'm jumping, 1st row. The whole place is going crazy.
Mike sang a lot of his hits, and he always kept coming back to my side of the stage, looking at me, and grinning. He's a really engaging performer! He played a cover of Oasis' Wonderwall, Ginuwine's Pony, and Adele's Rolling in the Deep. He also played a teaser of one of his songs off his new mixtape (The Layover, dropping November 20th).
He left stage after his set, and then came back once we started chanting "POSNER!" to play "Cooler Than Me". As soon as that was done, he looked at me, jumped off the stage, and ran a beeline to me to give me a bearhug. He said "Thank you" as the crowd mobbed him and kept grinning at me in that bearhug. IT WAS AWESOME. He literally had jumped off stage and ran to me, because I'd been there in it the whole time. Such a cool guy.
After the show, Mary and I met up with Rankin, Spencer, Kelly, and another friend Dylan and ran to where we could see the tour buses. Henry Strange (a member of the Brain Trust) came out first as we waited (IT WAS COLD). He signed my Mike Posner shirt, which I had bought before the show. We waited around for almost 2 hours, and finally Mike came out. He walked up and said to the little group of people there that he was going to say hello to everyone individually. When he got around to me, he came up and gave me another bearhug and said "HEY MAN!" and we talked for a bit. I reminded him my name was Noah Downs, and he said he kind of remembered me and that he remembered tweeting me a few days before. Then I got a few pictures with him and he signed my shirt and ticket. He told me I had been his anchor during the show and that I was one of the reasons the whole show was so great. It was a great moment for me, personally. Then we got a group picture with him, he listened to my remix of "Cooler Than Me" and loved it, and then said to send him stuff.
Mike Posner made my day. I couldn't be happier right now. Go see him live.

Puppies The Size of Soda Cans / MIKE POSNER
Hey all!
So, as promised, here is the link to PUPPIES THE SIZE OF SODA CANS. Get a towel - the cuteness will likely turn your brains to mush.
In other news, Almost, Maine is over, and I feel as though I was extremely privileged to be a part of that fantastic cast. The show that the ensemble built was incredible, and the friendships we solidified will stick around forever. Almost, Maine - I miss you.
As for what I'm doing now - Running around from meeting to meeting like a chicken with its head cut off. Wonderful image, eh? I'll get some downtime soon... after Virginia Theatre Auditions are done at the end of this month. Rest will come then.
TODAY, Mike Posner comes to Virginia Tech.
Here is one of his songs.

Almost, Maine
What a weekend.
Today is the opening of Almost, Maine by John Cariani, and I couldn't be more excited. This show is going to be fantastic. Go see it.
We've worked hard for the past 6 weeks and after a long tech weekend, we're ready for you to come see us play onstage. For FREE. So you don't have much of an excuse to not come.
Monday-Saturday, 7:30 pm, Free, T101 Theatre in Downtown Blacksburg, Virginia. Get there a little early to guarantee seating... especially if you come Saturday. Saturday will be packed.
In other news, VIRGINIA TECH BEAT MIAMI 38-35. What a game. It was down to the wire, with Logan Thomas personally rushing in the final touchdown to put us ahead, and then a stellar show by the defense to stop Miami in the last minute. David Wilson had some phenomenal runs as well. Go watch the highlights - you'll be there a while.
In the meantime, here's a story that I think is beautiful. This 29 year old woman was born deaf, and received cochlear implants - and this video is her hearing her own voice for the first time.
Ain't it cool?

Sometimes, You Just Don't Know What She's Talking About (MANSLATOR)
Hey there, everyone!
Well, it's a new month. And the LSAT's are over. And VT had a minor setback with Clemson. But that's ok - there's a whole season ahead.
Almost, Maine is progressing beautifully. This show is going to be absolutely STUNNING. The cast has created a community that has its own inner workings, problems, sorrows, joys, and celebrations. I think you, as the audience, will truly connect with the show. You might even be tempted to come back for more!
As I was leaving the VT/Clemson game on Saturday, I was approached by this glum-looking guy who offered me $6 to give him a ride home. As it turned out, he lived close to me, so I accepted. I asked him why he needed a ride back, and the response I got was "My ride broke up with me during the game today."
So basically, this guy lost his girl and then the Hokies lost. He was having a bad day. On the ride home, the whole story poured out - she was upset because apparently he just didn't understand her, and she felt he wasn't responding to her. It was essentially a breakdown of communication in the relationship. However, he said that she wanted to talk the day after, and they might get back together.
I hope they did.
But, if only he had one of these:

Coldplay - Viva La Mario?!
Hey everybody!
The best thing about studying for the LSAT's are the breaks. I can take long breaks, short breaks, medium breaks, nap breaks, snack breaks, etc. So yesterday, after studying for 4.5 hours, I took a long, snack & movie break. I watched Zombieland. Which is a pretty good movie, I think. (Doesn't hurt to have Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone.) (And Zombies)
Also, it has been brought to my attention that today is National Coffee Day. I believe that on any National Holiday, we shouldn't have classes. However, since everyone is awake anyways, you might as well go. If you want.
Finally - I am a fan of Mario. I have also been known to listen to Coldplay... on occasion. I didn't know they were friends, though:

You Like Skrillex? I like Skrillex.
Fun weekend - VT Hokies beat Marshall 30-10, which was pretty dang awesome. Looking ahead to Clemson this coming week. Go Hokies!
Went to see Moneyball (you know, that baseball movie about the Oakland A's starring Brad Pitt?) I loved it - it was a great movie, to be sure. Best this year? Maybe. Go see it and let me know what you think.
We had our first read-through for subUrbia (Bogosian) yesterday - I'm props. The show is showing incredible potential just from the first read. I think this cast will blow you away - look for a location TBA for the performances in December.
The VT Theatre and Cinema department's production of This is a fantastic show and if you haven't seen it, go do that. NOW. You got about a week left.
But, I have the LSAT's before the Clemson game Saturday... this video expresses my feelings towards it.
Plus Skrillex is awesome

Ian McKellen and Fresh Prince?
Hey there everybody!
So this week marks the end of a bunch of exams put forth by my professors in order to let me know whether I need to drop their class. Feedback is nice, professors, but I do not appreciate 2 solid weeks of exams.
Fortunately, I do not need to drop any classes. Go me.
I'm trying to make time to hang out with all my friends, now that the cramming period is over. Who wants to watch The Shining with me? (I've never seen it...)
Or we could watch Lord of the Rings. I'm kinda feeling that after this video.

JEDI KITTENS
Hey there everybody.
What a week. Auditions are all wrapped up, Almost, Maine rehearsals are in full swing, tests are starting to be the death of me, and in-class scenes are popping up everywhere. It's getting busy, but it's also fun. Second home game this weekend - Arkansas St. comes here to VT. GO HOKIES.
My scene partners in Almost, Maine are brilliant - two people I've really wanted to work with. I feel as though the two scenes (Getting It Back and Where It Went) will not disappoint - nor will any part of the show. It's a fantastic ensemble and I feel privileged to be a part of it.
Virginia Tech's production of Melissa James Gibson's This (directed by Susanna Rineheart)opens September 21st in Studio Theatre - make sure you go see it! I heard it's going to be a fantastic show.
Oh, and as promised - here are the Jedi Kittens.

Getting Blown Over
First set of audition weeks for fall semester is over. I'm working on a few productions, and I may be submitting a ten-minute play to direct. But for now, I really need to lock down and focus on what I have - including insane amounts of classwork.
I have a test in Political Communication tomorrow, which I'm not ready for... a scene to perform in stage combat today which I need to rehearse some more... yah, it's time to lock down.
But hey! If you're at VT, make sure you go see "This" in Studio Theatre. It will be one of my only forms of entertainment for the next two weeks.

Early Crew
What a weekend. Had an early-morning tailgating experience (Props to Sammi and the rest of the early crew - we love getting there at 5:30!) and a fantastic game (see below). Then we went to The Homeplace Restaurant on Saturday and stuffed ourselves, like good Theatre majors. I really didn't want classes this week to start. But about the game:
Virginia Tech beat Appalachian State 66-13 Saturday. GO HOKIES. Everyone played so well - I'm excited for the rest of this season. This Saturday was one of the hottest games I've ever stood through though. However, once I got inside, I was able to beat the heat. But this puppy knows how to do it better:

Stuck Inside Your Head
It's been two weeks since my last post.
So here's the update:
Classes started. They all have their ups. A few have their downs (no puns on my last name please). Best ones: Acting Shakespeare and Stage Combat.
Shakespeare's great, because simply put: I get to work with Shakespeare for class. Every Monday/Wednesday. IT'S GREAT. And Stage Combat is a great workout - plus we get to learn how to trick the audience into thinking we're beating the living hell out of each other. Then we get up, brush it off, and go get a smoothie.
Audition week has occurred. Casting for Twelfth Night is posted later today and callbacks for Almost, Maine will be posted at the same time. Congratulations to those cast in Twelfth Night and "break a leg!" to those who have Almost, Maine callbacks to look forward to.
Also, I finished my first Dubstep/Mashup album for public distribution. It's pretty awesome: Titled "Alpha Lamb." It's pretty cheap too.
This is your reward for reading this post about my life:

New Semesters
I have officially moved into my new apartment at Virginia Tech - it looks awesome, and I couldn't have moved in here without the help of my mother, father, girlfriend, and friends. Thanks, y'all.
Next week classes begin, so this is the calm before the storm. However, there are several things I look forward to this semester.
History of Drama and Theatre: I am actually kind of a history buff (I get this from my parents, especially my dad) so I'm looking forward to HODAT... you may call me crazy.
Violent Political Change: Enough said
Acting Topic: Stage Combat (Unarmed SPT): I'll be furthering my stage combat knowledge this semester, and hopefully will be declared proficient in unarmed stage combat. This class should be very exciting.
Acting Topic: Shakespeare: This class, taught by an amazing teacher, will delve into acting techniques for performing Shakespeare's works. This is the class I most look forward to, as I am a Shakespeare NUT.
Combat, Violent Political Change, A little (fake) history, and Shakespeare all come together to form this glorious thing (shared with me by my good friend Alexis):

What's Been Going On?
Hey everyone.
It's been quite a while since my last post. Let's see, what's happened?
We closed Two Gentlemen of Verona at Agecroft Hall and with it the Richmond Shakespeare Festival. Great festival this year, and I can't wait to see other upcoming Richmond Shakespeare shows.
I was able to see a few of my old friends, and ended my summer internship with Richmond Shakespeare. Then?
I WENT TO NEW YORK. That's an entire post in itself, which shall follow post-haste. (get it, poste-haste? haha)
After New York, I got back and went to my first RVAlution at the Hat Factory, which was pretty kick-ass. In fact, I daresay it was fantastic. Next week's RVAlution theme is Zombies. Go. Please. I'll be moving into my new apartment at VaTech, so someone go take pictures for me. Or check out the awesome RVAlution shots at Dope On Plastic or RVirAl.
I leave you with this. Party on.
Oh and something's up with the stock market. Psh.

Is that a rhetorical question?
Funny story about Scene 2 of Where's Waldo - it's difficult to film at night. It's fairly dark (which is what we were going for) but it is difficult to simulate moonlight when there is no moon.
So we didn't try. As you'll see, when Austin (the director) goes to check on Chris, he leaves his headlights on. This is so that he can see exactly what is going on, and so that we could have some light to film by.
You may notice that it gets dimmer throughout the film... this is because Austin's car battery was slowly dying throughout the shoot. When we wrapped up the scene, we couldn't get his car to start. Note to all aspiring director/actor types: CAR BATTERIES DIE.
And, here is Where's Waldo, Scene 2.

Who is Chris Cage?
We all grew up with "Where's Waldo," and partaking in the live-action parody film has been a blast. I play the lead in the film, as movie star Chris Cage.
Chris is a hotshot movie star, making up for his lack of true acting skills with sheer charm and muscle. He's also a bit of an airhead, but a good-hearted airhead. He is playing the lead in "Where's Waldo" (the film within the film) as the character Mark Knight. So my challenge here was that I was playing several roles - Chris Cage, Chris Cage acting as Mark Knight, and (you'll soon see) Chris Cage actually being Mark Knight. It was a confusing spectrum - I hope you can recognize the differences in characters (I tried to make them obvious through Chris's level of acting talent.)
Without further ado, we at Remember Tommy Productions and Blue Ark Productions present: Part 1 of "Where's Waldo"

Where's Waldo?
It's a been a while since my last post.
Wait Until Dark closed on Saturday (the 23rd). What a talented cast - I learned so much working on that show, and gained invaluable experience. But the best part was the friends I made.
Monday, the 25th marks the release of the first part of "Where's Waldo?" This is the movie project I have been working on for the entire summer, come to fruition. My character, Chris Cage, is a self-important movie star, who's not the brightest and exhibits certain traits of bipolarity. It certainly was an extremely fun movie to work on.

What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been.
Today was a strange day.
Started off with a forced cleaning of the basement. Nothing's really worse than being woken up to throw away childhood memories. Guess it had to happen. Managed to keep my Legos though. Love my Legos.
From there, I baked a pie. Random, I know. It was a lemon meringue pie. So delicious.
After that I went with my dad to help him dump stuff at the landfill. As we left, my dog's chain got stuck in the bumper (she wasn't on the chain, don't worry) yanked the chain from the trees it is secured between, and pulled the entirety of the chain (about 40 feet) behind me for roughly two miles before we realized.
We got to the landfill to discover it was closed on Tuesday. So Dad dropped me off at the gym where I got did too much cardio.
After the gym, I got home and played Left 4 Dead 2 (great game, by the way) and got online to check my Facebook. And sure enough, my friend Kristian Y. had posted something crazy from Tosh.0.
Your turn for the strange. Enjoy.

Eyes in a Moment of Blindness
Hey folks!
So, I like to think I have an eclectic music taste - I'll listen to anything from dubstep to country. So obviously, I have quite a bit of music, and in that, quite a bit of U2.
So when I first looked at this video, I thought it was just a really cool gimmick that turned out better than expected at a U2 concert in Nashville - Bono picks a guy out of the crowd, lets the guy select a song, and then the guy plays guitar while Bono sings. Cool - and the guy gets to keep the guitar.
Then I read the description - turns out this guy was blind. Suddenly, the song choice (look at the lyrics) becomes more meaningful, and the entire thing becomes WAY cooler.
Enjoy.

Cute? Yah...
I've been working fairly hard, so I haven't been able to post in over a week! But as my online class starts, I open another show, and get ready to head off to Wait Until Dark, I wanted to leave you all with your daily dose of adorable.
Also, some great movies coming out over the next few weeks - what are you looking forward to?

BARK BARK BARK... I mean... MEOW.
Hello all!
Due to constant working and having Wait Until Dark open, I haven't posted in 10 days. I know you all have been anxiously awaiting my return, no?
King Lear at Agecroft received a fourth RAVE review. Go see it. Buy your tickets now. Wait Until Dark at Swift Creek Mill received two excellent reviews as well - go see that one (running till July 23)
Today's CultshaExpo in Richmond was amazing - the conjunction theatre, dance, art, science, etc. into the Science Museum of VA was amazing. Great performances by all, and a flashmob by Theatre IV to boot!
And now, for your weekly dose of crazy. This cat was caught barking... and sheepishly tries to cover it up.

Wait Until Dark and King Lear
It's been a long week or so since my last posting - so here's why:
Like I mentioned in my last post - I'm working on two shows right now. More specifically, I now have two shows open which I have worked on.
One is King Lear, at Agecroft Hall. A fantastic show, cast, crew, and venue. I even created a trailer for King Lear. (click to see it!)
The second show? Wait Until Dark, at Swift Creek. It's another fantastic show, with a stellar cast, crew, and venue. Needless to say, with Tom Width at the helm, this has to be a wonderful show.
Come see both of them! And if I haven't convinced you to see Wait Until Dark... maybe this will:

Kid's Got Dolphin Senses
I'm working on a show right now - Wait Until Dark at Swift Creek Theatre. It revolves around one... unusual... day in the life of a blind woman. The other show I'm working on (King Lear at Agecroft Hall) has one character who loses his sight midway through the play.
So I've done some research on how people cope with blindness - and I came across this remarkable video:

More Halo? Yes, please.
I am a fan of Halo.
You may hate me for this, you may like me for this. I don't care - it's a great game, and even you video-game hipsters (Those who think it's too mainstream or that it's sold out - you know who you are) have to agree - it has it's awesome moments.
So when I saw on my phone today that Microsoft announced Halo 4 at E3 (thanks, Jerry Carlson!) I went nuts with excitement. I have never come across a part of Halo that I didn't like, and it looks like we're heading into a whole new trilogy!
It will be different to follow the Chief without Bungie, this is true. They created all that was Halo. However, I bet it will still be a fantastic game.
So you know where I'll be, come Holiday 2012 - right here:

Oh, How the Days Go By
I have been a very busy person lately. It's a little insane how busy, actually.
Fortunately, I'm working on things I love. But my workdays are running in the 12-16 hour ranges, as I'm entering tech for one show and tech for another show the following week. (By the way, go see King Lear at the Richmond Shakespeare Festival, and then go see Wait Until Dark at Swift Creek Mill Theatre. BOTH SHOWS WILL BE FANTASTIC.)
So when I have some free time, I like to read, or browse the internet, or spend time with my lovely lady, or my family. You know, normal stuff.
But sometimes, I just find stuff on Youtube like this:

Why The Prequels Were Awful
Star Wars. I own the VHS, DVD's, and have read much of the expanded universe. It's got a life of its own. But I've always wondered - how could George Lucas have messed up the prequels so badly?
He was given so much to work with, after all. Overall, the prequels were just meant to be cash-makers. Really, it seemed as though Lucas had nothing to do with them at all.
This explains so much.

Warning! Some of this is Literally, Unbelievable
Hey folks!
So, I've been stuck in a construction-zone house for about a week (due to an issue with our dishwasher malfunctioning, and then the bathroom, etc. It all spiraled out of control) so I haven't been able to post lately. However, one of the few rooms in my home that isn't under construction is the room with the TV.
Guess what I've had the (mis)fortune to see a lot this week? GLENN BECK, on Fox "News."
Now, I don't know what your particular political leaning may be, but frankly, that really doesn't come into play with Glenn Beck's show. His politics belongs the the party of Glenn - it doesn't really represent any particular party out there, despite what both Republicans and Democrats may say.
So I did some extra research on this man, hoping to find out what I could about his politics. Guess what I found? He's a wonderful spin-doctor, adding a personal (slightly psychotic) touch to every bit of 'news' or 'facts' he discusses. He masterfully doctors information, and when he is called out for falsehood, claims he is merely an 'entertainer,' which is meant to somehow let him off the hook (despite his claims of providing 'news'). If I want fake news entertainment, Glenn, I'll go to The Onion. (It's funny, more people believe The Onion's news than do believe Glenn Beck's!)
However, in my search, I did find this - which pretty much sums up Glenn Beck in a nutshell.

Slow Mo!
As an actor, I always like to film random things and post them on the internet. I also like to do weird stuff, as those of you who know me can attest to.
These guys combine filming and quirky fun in their slow-mo videos. I laughed so hard at this.

Zombies?
Today, I went on a nostalgia trip.
Last year, I participated in a show called "Project Z," produced by The Collaborative Company at VT. I was one of many talented writers, directors, and actors who came together to produce this show.
The show consisted of a bunch of short plays and short films. I visited the videos today - here are two. (I wrote and co-edited the Public Service announcements!)
Make sure you check out the rest!

Hipsters

I'm back in Richmond for the summer, as articulated in my last post.
You know what Richmond has? A bunch of hipsters. They wear ironic glasses, ironic clothes, drink PBR, and listen to music that you've probably never heard of. They're so "not mainstream" that they're mainstream, and that's IRONIC.
Now, I have nothing against hipsters. I think my girlfriend is one - my roommate from this past year (Jordan) was the ultimate hipster. He was so hipster that he claimed hipsters were too mainstream. I have a BUNCH of hipster friends, and that's cool.
But I need a way to figure out exactly what hipsters are saying sometimes - they don't always make much sense. So, I found this guide. Enjoy!

I Missed My Dog.
So, I've been away for a week due to the stress of finals and papers. However, after a drive that supposedly started at 5pm Friday, and didn't actually start until 10 pm, and then after getting home at 2am, and unloading my truck, I am FINALLY HOME FOR THE SUMMER.
I have been reunited with my parents, dog, and girlfriend.
But especially my dog. Pokey is one of the greatest animals ever. So cute. She's nearly deaf now, but I still love her.
This video reminded me of her - she actually acts like this!

Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You...
I was sitting at my desk in 5th grade when the World Trade Center towers in New York fell. I will never forget that day, I will never forget the wounds my country suffered, and I will never forget the name Osama bin Laden.
I sit at my desk now, nine and a half years later, as a junior in college. Osama bin Laden is now dead, and America lives on. The memories will always be there, but a measure of closure is now brought to the American people.
There are many who say that it is a shame that as a nation, we come together around death. To this I say: We are not celebrating death. We are celebrating a triumph over a symbolic terrorist threat.
And as my friend put it, "We do not gloat over the triumph over evil, because its very existence must forever be mourned."
Well done, America. The world is now a little bit safer.

500 Babies?!
Commercials these days are nuts - they always are looking to be the next big viral hit, and become super-awesome and seen by everyone on the internet. That's what works - look at the Old Spice guy! What a commercial - you've definitely heard of him. Every commercial gets more and more extreme.
Now, I've had a number of awesome moments in my life, from that grand slam in Little League baseball to going to my first Hokie Football game.
But I've never quite had a rush like this guy gets.

This Bird is the Word... any word.
So I was getting ready to head to class this morning when my friend Andrew posted something interesting - it was a video of a lyrebird. Now,what is a lyrebird, you may ask?
It's a bird that apparently can mimic any sound. It listens to the environment around it, and somehow "downloads" the sound into its mind and vocal cords, and reproduces it exactly.
This is today's Tiny Little Moment - and next time you think you're hearing one thing, remember - a lyrebird may be watching.

Birthday of the Bard
Yesterday was Shakespeare's birthday. I did much to celebrate - I read the book "Filthy Shakespeare," which is based completely around Shakespeare's sexual puns in his work, and watched "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged" by the Reduced Shakespeare Company. A pleasant day, to say the least - I was able to procrastinate working on my numerous papers, here at the end of the semester.
For you, this post comes a day late. However, here's a little something to celebrate:
Shakespeare was born on April 23, and he died on April 23. Happy Birthday, Bard.

Tickle?
So - this posting covers one of the most awesome subjects in the world: Penguins.
I remember when I realized I liked penguins - it was in Galveston, Texas, at the resort there, and they had a BUNCH of penguins at the aquarium, and I couldn't stop watching them swim around. They were so AWESOME.
So I regularly pay attention to penguin-related stuff, and I recognized the cuteness factor of penguins. But my question is - What does a penguin laugh sound like?
The answer (in the following video) is revealed - penguin laughs sound like cars that refuse to start.

Creating a World
My girlfriend is an artist. It runs in her family. Her mother is a fantastic visual artist, her relatives all have amazing artistic talent, and her father is an actor. So it all boiled down into her - an artist actress with beautiful blue eyes and some amazing talent.
So, I occasionally come up with some projects for her to work on - she's always looking for cool artsy thinks to do, from woodburning to spraypainting to helping me create props for Richmond Shakespeare.
Mary - here's your next project:

Cool Things Happen at the VMFA
This past weekend, several of my friends participated in a flash mob. Now you may think: "A flash mob! You mean one of those singing and dancing things in a random food court?!" No - my friends and Richmond Shakespeare are MUCH cooler than that. They are subtle.
The location: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The occasion: Promoting ART (by Yasmina Reza), which runs April 22-24 at the VMFA. Needless to say, this had the potential to be a great flash mob event.
The actors showed up at the VMFA on April 9th in the morning, and were discretely shown where they each would "mob" at. Then, at the signal, they began their flash mob.
The signal was sent, and the actors, walking near their positions, assumed the poses of famous works of art, in the middle of the busy day at the VMFA. They held these poses, and crowds gathered to watch.
Great things happen in Richmond everyday - theatre, art, culture. It's awe-inspiring when these come together.
Here's the flash mob video - watch it. And then, go see ART, by Yasmina Reza, running April 22-24 at the VMFA and April 29-May 15 at Sycamore Rouge.

Hey Cupid - Mike Posner
This blog post involves a bit of self-promotion.
A few months ago, I and my friends at the recently created Blue Ark Productions came up with an idea - to make a music video for Mike Posner's "Hey Cupid" off the A Matter of Time mixtape. We emailed J Records and Mike, and they gave us permission to do it. As fans of Mike's work - this was pretty awesome.
So we created a shot list, found locations, and found a crew to work. Now, months later, here is the final product:

Waiting - We Need to Go Deeper
Hey all!
So, I'm home for weekend, and just went to see Henley Street Theatre's Waiting for Godot. Great Show! My friends Bob Jones and Foster Solomon were part of the cast - I recommend everyone go see it! Or read the play - Waiting for Godot is one of those plays that you just have to read. You may hate it, you may love it.
Tomorrow I have an audition for Two Gentlemen of Verona at Richmond Shakespeare - wish me luck. But as I sit here trying to fall asleep I found this video... it's little Leo,back before Titanic, Inception, etc. The entire time I watched this, I kept thinking - the concept of Inception would be great marketing for Bubble Yum....

Portal 2
Hey folks!
So I stayed up last night writing a series of papers for class - fun, right? (Well, it kinda was). The not-fun part of yesterday was the bi-polar Blacksburg weather... 70's on Monday, but then snowing yesterday morning. WHAT?!
But today I saw a pretty neat "ad" for Portal 2. Now - Portal (the original) was an amazing game, if a bit short. I can only imagine that Portal 2 is insanely fun. Here you go!

Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself...
This is a long post. But it's definitely worth the read.
The 24 Hour Theatre Project has come and gone. In its place, I have a program, a poster, a script, and an amazing experience to remember for the rest of my life.
When I walked into the T101 Theatre (Virginia Tech)at 7:00 yesterday morning (April 2nd), I was nervous about what my script would be, anxious about my actors memorizing lines, and worried that I wasn't up to the task of directing this show.
1st win of the day - John Kayrouz had written me a script that was pure gold. The play was entitled "Devil's Audition." This play literally had EVERYTHING - Shakespeare, Marlowe, liquor, anger, sex, conceit, deceit, and massive amounts of honey. Thank you, John Kayrouz.
My actors showed up at 730 - we went to our first rehearsal space (of many - there was a rotation schedule) and immediately started doing read-thrus and putting it on its feet. The roles were written perfectly for my actors - Jonny Walker for his "lady's man" mentality, Cyrus for his showmanship, and Carter for his previously unknown ability to be intimidating, yet strangely amiable.
2nd win of the day - My actors were good at their craft.
We broke for lunch, and my actors went off with each other to Souvlaki's - a little restaurant across the street, where I encountered them ten minutes later running lines and having fun. What a team.
We came back after lunch, and hopped right into solidifying blocking - I had my first near-heart attack of the night... I realized we had less than 7 hours left and we weren't off book yet. The blocking was down. The next few hours focused on lines.
About mid-way through line work, late afternoon/early evening, we had to run Tech. I had a simple cue list - but my set was the most intricate part. I had used nearly all the stock elements we had to create the Lobby/Bar of the Gate Royale Hotel (the setting) and the run crew did not like me at that point. But I fought for the set, and kept it.
3rd win of the day - easy cue-to-cue, and managing to have my set as well.
Then, dinner break. This was where my actors kept running lines. And guess what?
4th win of the day - They got them!!!!
We had a project-wide meeting at 630 - Alyssa said "House opens in 25!" and we hopped to it. I collected my actors for one last line-through, created a honey ritual (honey was intrinsic to this play - we all swallowed a spoonful of honey for luck) and then I yelled:
ACTORS! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION!
and the response - "HOOAH! HOOAH! HOOAH!"
Another glorious moment.
Finally, the show went up at 730. I was in the audience. The first half shows (1 - The Fairest One - a bachelor show with Paris of Troy, Hero, Athena, and Aphrodite. 2 - When the Arrow Leaves the Bow - an unsettling murder mystery. 3 - Your Play - A story about a girl and her father) were all fantastically written and directed - seemingly going off without a hitch. The bar was set very high.
After Intermission, the first show was "Friday" (yes, apparently referencing the terrible pop song of the same name by Rebecca Black), about three lesbians and their relations. Again, beautifully executed all around - and then came my show.
Devil's Audition went up. James Miller (played by Jonny Walker) began reciting Hamlet, in preparation for a film shoot. Mel, the Bartender (played by Carter Gaylord) watched him closely from the bar, interjecting at moments with insight for James. Clay Windfield (Cyrus Pynn) walked in and instantly stole the stage. Clay is the ultimate actor, an actor with a capital "A." He was in the spotlight, both offering advice to James and intimidating him in the process, while Mel looked on with contempt. The audience was in stitches.
When Cyrus left the stage, there was a monumental amount of applause. Some stood. In the middle of the show. Does that even happen!?
My show ended. Jonny and Carter wrapped it perfectly. Exactly as I wanted. The applause, once again, was overwhelming.
The final show went up (Secondhand Delivery - a play involving a salesman assassin, a corny husband, and a determined housewife). The entire show received a full standing ovation. Congratulations were had, pictures were taken, the set was struck, and suddenly, it was over as quickly as it had begun.
I went home and slept.
Thanks to all who participated in this project, especially my cast and stage manager Jackie Mullen (She was everything I needed and more) and my author, John. Thanks to Alyssa Kaye Markfort for her organizing this event, and Helen Thomas for helping her execute it.
I leave you with this:

I MADE THIS FOR YOU!
Hey folks.
As I sit here, two amazing things are happening here in Blacksburg.
1st - It snowed today. April 1st. It snowed. A decently large amount.
2nd - THE 24 HOUR THEATRE PROJECT. has BEGUN! I'm directing one of the performances, and let me tell you - this is going to be extremely interesting. For those of you who didn't click that link above, here's the deal -
6 writers. 6 directors. 19 actors. 6 scenes. Each director/writer team has a randomly selected number of actors, who are then randomly selected from the ensemble by the audience. The writers go write a play for those actors/director from 8 pm to 6 am, the directors get the plays at 7 am, and then the actors show up and rehearsals start at 730 am. The shows go up, completely memorized and blocked, at 730 pm.
And that's a show. I'm directing. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow... (actually, Sunday. I'll be exhausted tomorrow.)
Meanwhile, I was revisiting Julian Smith videos. Here's one of my favorites:
Enjoy.

Google Android Software - It's Like Crack
Hey folks!
Today's Tiny Little Moment comes from this video of the Google Android:
That little guy's got moves - I wonder if my Droid phone can do that?
Speaking of dancing - I had a great weekend. It was Ring Dance here at VT, and the lovely Mary Sader came out to see me (with her father, Alan Sader, accompanying to visit the university). Friday's Ring Banquet and Saturday's Ring Dance were part of a fantastic tradition here, of which I am glad to say I took part. Pictures, while not up yet, will be posted here soon.
Of course, remember to comment and to share this blog with your friends! (Or if you don't like it, share it with your enemies...) See ya!

MY LITTLE PONY?!
Ok. Today's Tiny Little Moment comes to you, courtesy of my sleep-deprived brain, in the form of something that is nerdy, weird, and awesome, all at the same time. There are many inside jokes involved.
That said, this made my day - and hopefully it will make yours. Presenting: What Happens When Starcraft II meets "My Little Pony"... comment.
I enjoy it.

Childhood!
Today's Tiny Little Moment comes to you courtesy of my friend Melissa, who posted an old video...
So, if y'all are like me, you watched some pretty awesome TV shows in the 90's. Including this one:
Zoboomafoo! I remember that show like it was yesterday. And thus, I was introduced to lemurs and many other wild and exotic animals. Is this show still on?
In other news, I've been watching clips from that show Human Weapon - from the History Channel (a lot more recent than Zoboomafoo, right?). I think it's interesting that 9 year old me sought to learn as much as he could about international creatures, and 20 year old me is seeking to learn as much as he can about international fighting styles. How we change, as we grow up.

OTTERS
Hey folks! Today, I'm starting filming on a new web series, to be released this summer. More to come soon on that. But in other news.... today's Tiny Little Moment.
Alright, so at the risk of this blog becoming a "HEY! I SAW FUN THINGS ON THE INTERNET BLOG" this video made my day before I go out to film.
Adorable, right?
I should probably get something insanely manly to make up for the adorableness of posting that... eh. I'll let it slide. Today.
Enjoy!

Winning
Ok, so the last Tiny Little Moment was essentially me getting angry at Rebecca Black for her song and music video that essentially was lesson in the passage of days in a week. Genius, right?
Today's Tiny Little Moment was about another song/music video, which I felt made up for Rebecca Black's... whatever it is:
Now, I know Charlie Sheen is relatively old news now, but this video makes me like the whole thing.
Thank you, Songify This, for today's moment.

Friday (On Monday)
Ok. Today's Tiny Little Moment is not cute, nor profound. It is not cool, mind-blowing, reflective, or any combination of positive adjectives.
It is sad.
Rebecca Black is now an internet sensation... for her terrible singing, music video, and the publishing thereof. The song in question?
^That crap.
I mean, seriously? Listen to the lyrics again... "Partying, Partying, yah. Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun, Looking Forward to the Weekend."
That, my friends, is most definitely poetic genius. Someone better call her the next Shakespeare. (A poet on the level of the Bard himself, says my good friend John Darr)
So, the Tiny Little Moment I have to share with you is this: This girl stole 3 minutes and 48 seconds from my life that I want back.
Although, I do enjoy this cover:

Packing
I'm packing to head back to VT in the morning.
A bunch of folks are back there already - I'm late because I don't have class till 2:30... fun eh? So I get to drive back in the morning and spend this full day with my close and extended family.
I'm ready for the long haul back to VT... and the equally long haul to the end of the semester.
Today's Tiny Little Moment:
Sitting down to lunch with my mom, dad, uncle, aunt, and mema - good southern cooking and fun. It was delicious, and warmed my heart. I'm going to miss them in the coming weeks.

My pup.
Today's Tiny Little Moment:
Feeding my dog, yesterday.
A weird thing to post as a "moment," but you know, it really was one of the highlights of my day. I went to Cracker Barrel with my mum this morning, and got the Country Boy Breakfast (steak for breakfast? YUM) but I couldn't eat all my eggs, nor could my mom finish her sausage. So we put it in a little box to bring home to the dog.
It was a relatively warm day - 60's. So when we got home I sat down outside with my dog and started feeding her tiny bits of egg. I would just tear off a piece of egg (scrambled hard) and give it to her, so she could eat it. This way, we went through 3 eggs together, and one sausage ( She loved the sausage). But here's the funny part: I started trying to feed her the one biscuit we had saved, and she took each individual piece and buried it, probably intending to save it for later.
As of today, she hadn't dug up any of her bread. But, at least she got a great meal and had some fun digging, right?
And that's today's Tiny Little Moment.

That Tiny Little Moment: Rediscovery of This Old Blog
Well, I guess I wasn't as successful in posting regularly as I'd hoped to be in 2008. So here's the latest news:
Scrubs is still one of my favorite shows (see my first post). I still act regularly (being a theatre major at Virginia Tech), and my drama teacher (Mr. Mudge, see my second post) is now my employer at Richmond Shakespeare and one of my best friends and mentors (I call him Grant now, because I graduated in 2009).
I'm pursuing two degrees at Virginia Tech - Political Science (Legal Option) and Theatre Arts (Focus in Shakespeare, acting/directing/designing) and have thoroughly become a Virginia Tech HOKIE.
Both my parents are retired now, so they travel all over the place (recently went to Florida for vacation... twice in one month). Mom's planning a trip to Europe next year, and I'm planning on heading back to New York to see the Royal Shakespeare Company perform in August.
But on to the blogging...
The Tiny Little Moment I have to share with you today - working on the play Double Falsehood, produced by Liz Blake White at Richmond Shakespeare and directed by Jeff Cole. This play's origins are questionable - most people believe it to be a modernization of an old Shakespeare play (Cardenio?) which is now lost to us.
**SPOILER ALERT**
I read the part of Henriquez (pronounced Henricks) and definitely enjoyed playing the scoundrel/villain of the play. Henriquez caused all sorts of mischief that everyone else had to sort out, but it ended up pleasant in the end - the girl Henriquez raped (Violante) decided she liked him passing well, so he married her to make up for the raping/abandoning/ general traumatization he did to her. Happy ending! (Right?)
**END SPOILER ALERT**
There's a lot more to the plot than that, but to find that bit, you need to go read the play (trust me, you'll have a good time - it's hilarious in some places and not too thick). However, I must say - being a cast member in the Second Tuesday Staged Reading Series at Richmond Shakespeare was EXTREMELY entertaining and overall fun. The cast/crew were phenomenal, and I was able to act with old friends (Andrew Hamm, Alex Wiles, David Janosik, Sarah Jamillah Johnson, and Eric Dobbs), new friends (Eric Evans, Becki Jones, Tim Goodman, and Tyler Wilson) and my girlfriend's dad (Alan Sader, who is both a friend and a trusted mentor). The rehearsal process was a wonderful - from discovering the humor in the play (both intended and not), to performing, and then the gathering at our favorite post-show pub (PENNY LANE!).
Well, that was a rather long posting for a relatively Tiny Little Moment.
Tonight: Surprise Shakespeare at Sycamore Rouge!
